The Big John Salvage Hoult Road Site is located northwest of the Monongahela River. The elevation is approximately 1,000 feet above mean sea level (msl). Vertical relief across the site is approximately 120 feet. The northeast and southeast area of the site is relatively flat and is sparingly vegetated. The northwest and southwest area of the site is vegetated with trees and shrubs and has steep hillsides sloping towards the Unnamed Tributary #1 and the Monongahela River. Surface water runoff from the site flows in a southwesterly direction into the Unnamed Tributary #1 through three intermittent tributaries (East Tributary, Middle Tributary, and West Tributary). Water flowing from the Unnamed Tributary # 1 accumulates in a pond where the sediments settle out and the overflow from the pond drains into the Monongahela River through a pipe buried under a former railroad bed.
The Site is contaminated with coal tar impacted soil and sediments with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX).
