The former
Chudnow Iron and Metal Site located at 5401 West State Street in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin was
referred to EPA by WDNR in March 2021 for having a large quantity of
contaminated polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals material (i.e. soil
and debris) illegally stored on-site. Based on the former and current owners’
analytical data, the stored material exceeded EPA removal management levels for
arsenic, lead, various PCB Aroclors in addition to exceedance of hazardous waste concentrations for
Total PCBs. Estimates of total material requiring removal range between
approximately 4,300 to 5,300 cubic yards.
An Action
Memo was singed in March 2022 to remove the stored material. Site Access was granted in late August 2022 by the property owner allowing EPA to perform
the Removal Action. EPA is allowed up to approximately $1.8 million to complete
the Removal. EPA will mobilize to the Site on September 19, 2022 and will
complete the Removal in approximately 8-to 10-weeks.
