Background
On March 16, 2022, a Walmart Distribution Center in
Plainfield, Indiana, was involved in a large fire. Black smoke was
generated and fire ash and debris were carried offsite. The Plainfield
Fire Department and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) requested
assistance from EPA for monitoring air quality. EPA mobilized staff and support
contractors to collect measurements for air pollutants. Air measurements
were collected in the field and air samples were collected and submitted for
lab analysis. Lab results will be posted to this website following data
review.
EPA is coordinating with other organizations, including:
Plainfield Fire Department, Town of Plainfield, Hendricks County Health
Department, Marion County Public Health Department, Indiana Department of
Environmental Management, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Walmart corporation.
