The City of Philadelphia has approached EPA Region 3 for assistance with the “Soil Kitchen” Project. The Region in turn requested ERT with its mobile lab to participate in the Project and assist with the soil analyses component of the event. “Soil Kitchen” is a planned temporary public arts project commissioned by the Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, in association with the Future Farmers group. The event is scheduled to coincide with the EPA Brownfields Conference which will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 3-5, 2011. “Soil Kitchen” will serve as a wind-powered soup kitchen, soil testing laboratory and event space. ERT will be conducting soil analyses for cadmium, arsenic, and lead. The data collected will be useful to EPA Region 3 in supporting planned assessment work at former lead smelter facilities in Philadelphia by providing urban soil background. The EPA and ATSDR teams will be available for the three-day event to interpret the analytical results for the residents.
