EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials. Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site. Magnesium generator, Intermet, will be off site for two weeks before resuming transporting pallets off site. Magretech is looking at orphaned drums to see if they can use them in their operation. START is conducting sampling and using an Innov-x Alpha 4000 S for readings of soil. SPX Contech, from Portage, MI, and MJ Metals of Bridgeport, CT, are coordinating with EPA for removal of their magnesium materials. To date 12 generators have removed, or are in various stages of planning in order to remove, their drums off site. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

American Iron & Metal’s (AIM) (generator), subcontractor MHF, continued to repack their drums inside of gate 2. The drums were put into super sacks that held 8 drums a piece. The super sacks were placed on special pallets built to hold 8 drums. AIM repackaged 44 pallets of drums @ 8 drums a pallet for a total of 352 drums for the day.
MJ Metals mobilized to the site to identify their drums for future removal.

EPA’s ERRS contractor (Guardian) finished cleaning and organizing Building 8. The drums in Building 8 were segregated by hazardous and nonhazardous, flammable and nonflammable, and materials that may react to each other.

American Iron & Metal’s (AIM) (generator), subcontractor MHF, finished packaging AIM’s drums into super sacks. MHF repacked 34 pallets @ 8 drums a pallet for a total of 252 drums. MHF also identified 16 drums that belonged to AIM that were in various locations. The drums were identified, segregated from other generators drums, and repacked. AIM also had approximately 15 drums that will have to be over-packed and incinerated.

ERRS contractor Guardian took down lights in Building 7 that had become a falling hazard. Guardian also began to move drums from Building 7 to Building 8 were they could be properly stored.

American Iron & Metal’s (AIM) (generator), had 2 personnel on site to clean their work areas and placard super sacks. AIM’s subcontractor MHF were off site at Polaski where they repackaged approximately 300 drums belonging to AIM into super sacks for future transport.

PADEP Holler mobbed to the site to help in oversight and turn off the High Volume Air Samplers put in place by DEP’s Radiation Protection Program. The filters will be changed on 6/18/07 and replaced with new ones. The samplers will then be restarted for another 5 day sample run.
ERRS contractor Guardian continued to clean, and remove drums from Building 8. The drums were relocated to Building 7 where they could be properly stored. ERRS also fixed a falling hazard on the west entrance of Building 7.

Intermet’s (generator) subcontractor, NIAPRO, plans to be on site the week of 6/18/07 to resume shipping drums off site.
American Iron & Metal will be off site 2 to 3 weeks to secure transportation and a receiver for their materials.
MJ Metals (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.
SPX Contech (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.
Sky Bank will be on site to evaluate the best method to remove their assets.
EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site. EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
