Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Magnesium generator, Intermet, is on site to continue segregating and weighing before shipping their pallets.  Magretech is looking at orphaned drums to see if they can use them in their operation.  ERRS contractor Guardian is on site and continues to lab pack.  START is conducting sampling and using an Innov-x Alpha 4000 S for readings of soil.   SPX Contech, from Portage, MI, and MJ Metals of Bridgeport, CT, are coordinating with EPA for removal of their magnesium materials.  To date 12 generators have removed, or are in various stages of planning in order to remove, their drums off site.   EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

Intermet’s subcontractor NIAPRO shipped 2 truckloads of material off site.  Both truckloads were consigned to Magretech, Bellevue, OH.  Two different trucking companies were used, Hazmat Environmental, Buffalo, NY and Dandy Services, Warrendale, PA.  The combined approximate weight of both loads was 85,400 pounds and consisted of 48 pallets @ 4 drums a pallet.

Meridian’s subcontractor Labor Ready waited on a truck to transport the last of Meridians drums off site, the truck was delayed.

EPA’s OSC Downie mobilized to the site for oversight and coordination of site activities.

PADEP Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in site overview and sampling.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

START attended a morning safety meeting held by EPA’s ERRS contractor (Guardian).  Guardian completed lab packing and is staging for shipment off site.      

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.

Intermet’s subcontractor NIAPRO shipped 2 truckloads of material off site.  Both truckloads were consigned to Magretech, Bellevue, OH.  Two different trucking companies were used, Hazmat Environmental, Buffalo, NY and Dandy Services, Warrendale, PA.  The combined approximate weight of both loads was 86,000 pounds and consisted of 42 pallets @ 4 drums a pallet.

Meridian’s subcontractor Labor Ready shipped 1 truckload of Meridians material.  The load was consigned to Magpro, Camden, TN with the load being transported by Southern Refrigeration of Texarkana, AR.  The approximate weight of the load was 40,500 pounds and consisted of 28 pallets @ 4 drums a pallet.

ERRS contractor Guardian placarded and labeled their 1 ton boxes and acid drums.  Guardian also lined walk ways through Building 7 that avoid overhead and tripping hazards.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.  


Next Steps
American Iron & Metal will be off site 1 to 2 weeks to secure transportation and a receiver for their materials.  

MJ Metals (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

SPX Contech (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

ERRS contractor Guardian will ship acid drums, and lab packs for proper disposal on 6/27/07.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
