Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Magnesium generator, Intermet, is on site to continue segregating and weighing before shipping their pallets.  Magretech is looking at orphaned drums to see if they can use them in their operation.  ERRS contractor Guardian is on site and continues to lab pack.  START is conducting sampling and using an Innov-x Alpha 4000 S for readings of soil.   SPX Contech, from Portage, MI, and MJ Metals of Bridgeport, CT, are coordinating with EPA for removal of their magnesium materials.  To date 12 generators have removed, or are in various stages of planning in order to remove, their drums off site.   EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

6/27/07
Intermet’s subcontractor NIAPRO shipped 2 truckloads of material off site.  Both truckloads were consigned to Magretech, Bellevue, OH.  Two different trucking companies were used, Hazmat Environmental, Buffalo, NY and Dandy Services, Warrendale, PA.  The combined approximate weight of both loads was 85,600 pounds and consisted of 46 pallets @ 4 drums a pallet.

EPA’s OSC Downie was on site for oversight and coordination of site activities.

PADEP Morettini and Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in site overview and coordination of site activities.  PADEP Morettini and Hoffman demobilized.

START attended a morning safety meeting held by EPA’s ERRS contractor (Guardian).  Guardian shipped 1 truckload of non hazard solids, liquids, and acid pumped from acid tank into 55-gallon drums.  ERRS also continued to rearrange and clean Buildings 7 & 9 before they had to shut down due to lightning and high winds.        

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.

Intermet’s subcontractor NIAPRO cleaned work areas and finished weighing the last of its loads.

PADEP Holler, Morettini, and Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in site overview and coordination of site activities.  PADEP Holler was on sight for the last time he will be retiring with his last day being 6/29/07.  PADEP Holler spearheaded the clean up at Remacor and was active in getting the EPA’s presents on the site.  Gratitude of thinks goes out to him from OSC Downie, START, and all those involved at Remacor.  The DEP is losing over 27.5 years of experience with Dan Holler and we will be losing an individual who worked tirelessly to maintain the health and safety of the residence of West Pittsburg.  Enjoy your retirement Mr. Dan Holler and you will be sorely missed.

Intermet’s  subcontractor NIAPRO was on site to await the pickup of its leased pallet scale.  The company did not show by noon so the pickup was rescheduled for 7/2/07.

PADEP Wozniak arrived on site to turn off air samplers.  PADEP Wozniak demobilized.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.


Next Steps
American Iron & Metal will be off site 1 to 2 weeks to secure transportation and a receiver for their materials.  

MJ Metals (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

SPX Contech (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

ERRS contractor Guardian plans to be on site the week of 7/9/07.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
