Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Magretech is looking at orphaned drums to see if they can use them in their operation.  ERRS contractor Guardian plans to be on site the week of 7/9/07 to continue with lab packing operations.  START will be monitoring drilling operations starting the week of 7/9/07 and will bring in an extra person.   SPX Contech, from Portage, MI, and MJ Metals of Bridgeport, CT, are coordinating with EPA for removal of their magnesium materials.  To date 12 generators have removed, or are in various stages of planning in order to remove, their drums off site.   EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

7/2/07
Intermet’s subcontractor NIAPRO shipped pallet scale off site.  They will have no more activity for the week.

PADEP Morettini and Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in site overview and coordination of site activities.  PADEP Morettini and Hoffman demobilized.

ERRS contractor Guardian had its subcontractor New Castle Lock & Key on site to replace motion sensor on gate 2.

START noticed that there was standing water outside of gate 2 that seemed to be flowing under the brick wall.  START investigated the seepage and found that the water was flowing from under ground.  A broken water pipe was suspected to be the problem. START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.    

7/03/07
PADEP Morettini, Shimko, and Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in site overview and coordination of site activities.  PADEP Shimko will be working with START on the drilling of monitoring wells.  PADEP Shimko was informed of STARTs drilling plans and location of each well to be dug.  PADEP Morettini, Shimko, and Hoffman demobilized.

PA American Water investigated water leak and decided that they would by pass the previous lines and put new lines connecting from their main line.  The leak is from preexisting lines on site and is on the water company’s side of the meter.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.

7/05/07
START was assisted by ex Remacor employee Tom Matesic in locating utilities on site in preparation for drilling.  Mr. Matesic had been an engineer for Remacor and had knowledge of were certain utilities were located.

7/06/07
PADEP Wozniak arrived on site to turn off air samplers.  PADEP Wozniak demobilized.

PA Drilling was on site to assess locations for monitoring wells.

START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site.


Next Steps
American Iron & Metal will be off site 1 to 2 weeks to secure transportation and a receiver for their materials.

MJ Metals (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

SPX Contech (generator) will submit a workplan/health and safety plan to EPA for the handling and removal of their drums from the site.

ERRS contractor Guardian plans to be on site the week of 7/9/07.

PA American Water will replace preexisting lines with one line coming off their main meter near the road.  PA American Water plans on beginning the work on the week of 7/9/07.

PA Drilling plans to mobilize to site the week of 7/9/07 to begin drilling 4 monitoring wells.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
