EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials. Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site. Monitoring Wells have been installed to aide in accessing extent of contamination on site. Winters Performance Products, Inc. is currently making preparations to ship its product off site. MJ Metals of Bridgeport, CT, is coordinating with the EPA to be on site for drum identification and count. To date 16 generators have removed, or are in various stages of planning in order to remove, their material off site. START is currently identifying and tagging materials with the assistance of a consultant, an ex employee of Remacor, who is assisting under START subcontract. EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian continues to work on RAD and burn piles. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services. ERRS started cleaning around the lime pile underneath the silo north of the DeOxSulf building. ERRS moved debris and drums from around the pile so that they could begin the process of reaction of the lime in the reaction pit. ERRS removed previously reacted lime from the pit to the drying area. ERRS also cleaned the area in which they had been packing the Rad pile into drums.
PADEP Hoffman mobilized to site and assisted in oversight. PADEP Hoffman demobilized.
START continued to mark and tag pallets that had been identified by means of assistance from START”s consultant. START removed Data Rams from site due to the threat of precipitation; the Personal Data Ram (PDR) was also removed from site. Data Rams and PDRs are not weather proof and must be shielded from getting wet, ERRS will be building stands that will shield the equipment from the elements.
START assisted as needed, conducted written and photographic documentation, and monitored activities conducted on site. START demobilized for the weekend.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services. ERRS moved lime from underneath the silo south of the DeOxSulf building to the reaction pit where they reacted the lime in water and moved it to the drying pit. The lime was allowed to remain in the elements for an extended period of time consequently there was little or no reactions. ERRS used a Takeuchi to adjust the pile of lime as needed so the Wheel Loader to could shovel a bucket of material and transport it to the reaction pit. Once the lime was placed in the reaction and water added, the Excavator mixed the product to make sure all material was wet for reaction. A preset time limit was then observed which gave the lime enough time to react. Once the lime had sufficient time to react it was moved to a drying pit using the wheel loader. In the drying pit the lime is mixed with slightly dryer lime to aide in the drying process.
Neither the Data Rams nor the Personal Data Ram was used due to precipitation.

American Iron & Metal (AIM) will not be shipping material to Von Roll America for 2 weeks starting on 10/14/07. Von Roll America will be down for outage replacing bricks in their furnace, it is a planned outage. AIM expects to resume shipping material to Magpro, Camden, TN
Intermet is making plans to resume shipping their product off site.
Winter Performance Products, Inc plans to start removing their material the first week of November 2007.
MJ Metals (generator) is making arrangements to start removing their product in November, 2007.
EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site. EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
Drums that have magnesium fines are not vented and pose a threat of combustion. One drum from the batch has already caught fire and the remainder of the drums will be vented by ERRS.
