Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  Intermet has suspended shipping material until further notice.  SPX Contech will be repackaging its material in preparation to ship it off site.  

EPA’s ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services, Inc. (GES) is back on site and continuing with its cleanup operations.  ERRS continues to react material removed from the burn pile on Slab #3.    PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to EPA as well as doing a full site assessment.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

MHF Logistical Solutions had 1 person on site to ship its remaining empty over packs off site and also 2 fork trucks.  MHF has suspended shipping for Intermet do to logistical problems.

EPA’s Senior Site Administrative Officer Rich Messimer mobilized to site to oversee site logistics and administration.  EPA’s Rich Messimer demobilized.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman mobilized to site to assist in oversight of operations.  PADEP Hoffman also started the High Volume Samplers.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.  

A morning safety meeting was held by EPA, ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services, Inc.  ERRS continues to react material removed from burn pile located on Slab #3. ERRS is also sifting material removed from the burn pile in order to remove large debris.

START attended morning safety meeting held by EPA, ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services, Inc.  ERRS is reacting and sifting material removed from the burn pile previously located on Slab #3.  ERRS is also preparing to move RAD drums to the back of Building #7 for staging to ship off site.  

START continues to assist the EPA as needed, conduct written/photographic documentation, and monitor activities conducted on site.

START attended morning safety meeting held by EPA, ERRS contractor Guardian Environmental Services, Inc.  ERRS continues to sift and react material from the burn pile.  

Pennsylvania American Water Company was on site to find the leak in their system that is on site.  PAWC reports losing 60,000 gallons of water per day inside Gate 2 in the grassy area near the propane tank. This area continues to have standing water.

START continues to assist the EPA as needed, conduct written/photographic documentation, and monitor activities conducted on site.  


Next Steps
No PRP activity is presently occurring on site.

ERRS plans to stage RAD drums in Building 7 & 9 for future disposal.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.


Key Issues
Drums that have wet magnesium fines and are not vented pose a threat of combustion.  One drum has already caught fire.   Efforts are underway to stabilize these drums that are staged on the truck-scale slab at the site.
