Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material and will be preparing drums to be shipped off site. Intermet is re–working pallets and drums and plans to resume shipping material in the near future. Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.

EPA’s ERRS is profiling material in Building #9 for waste disposal and moving orphaned drums to a central location. PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site. EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF continues to change lids and pallets on Intermet material. To date MHF has staged 264 drums belonging to Intermet in Building #7.  

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS continued to clean and organize drums in Building #9. ERRS has separated material to be mixed in the reaction pit and moved material that will be placed into new drums. ERRS also did its weekly maintenance on all equipment.

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.  START demobilized.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF has 3 truckloads of material staged in Building #7 ready for transport off site. MHF has made arrangements for 1 truck to be on site 5/13/08 to take a load of Intermet material.  MHF will also be receiving over-packs for Intermet drums.

EPA OSC Jack Downie mobilized to site for oversight of activities.  OSC Downie demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS decanted water from orphaned weathered drums. The dried material was placed in new drums with vented lids. ERRS has been checking the pH on drums containing water before they handle the material.  

START mobilized to site, assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.      



Next Steps
SPX Contech has plans to ship the remainder of its material the week of 5/12/08.

Intermet plans to ship a load of its material on 5/13/08.

ERRS plans to begin shipping the 250-ton waste piles (estimated total weight 3,500 tons)off site the week of 5/19/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of their material from the site. EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
