Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials. Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material and will be preparing drums to be shipped off site. Intermet is re –working pallets and drums and is actively shipping material off site.  Product Technology is making plans to ship its material off site.

EPA’s ERRS is repackaging material in Building #2 to make it DOT shippable. PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF shipped 1 load of material for Intermet.  The load consisted of 88 drums (22 pallets @ 4 drums/pallet) with an actual weight of 37,320 pounds.  The load was consigned to MagRetech, Bellevue, OH and was transported by Triad Transport, McAlester, OK.  MHF also continued to change lids and rings on Intermet’s material which is being staged in Building #7.

OSC Jack Downie was on site for oversight of activities.

EPA’s Senior Site Administrative Officer of The Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site and did administrative oversight.  Rich Messimer demobilized.  

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS continued to repackage orphaned material from Building #2 and identify material that may be taken by NIAPRO for recycling.  

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation. START demobilized.  

05/14/08
START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF shipped 2 truckloads of material for Intermet. The combined weight of the loads was 78,660 pounds and each consisted of 88 drums per truckload.  The loads were consigned to MagRetech, Bellevue, OH and were transported by Triad Transportation, McAlester, OK.  MHF also continued to repackage material for Intermet.

EPA OSC Jack Downie was on site for oversight of activities.  

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities, areas of concern / safety issues associated with the day’s activities.  ERRS continued to remove material from weathered drums in Building #2 and place the contents in new drums with vented lids.  ERRS has been checking the pH balance on drums containing water before they handle the material.  

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.      


Next Steps
SPX Contech has changed its plans to ship the remainder of its material the week of 5/26/08.

Intermet plans to continue to ship material off site.

ERRS plans to begin shipping the fifteen 250-ton waste piles off site the week of 5/19/08.

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
