Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material and is preparing drums to be shipped off site.  Intermet is re –working pallets and drums and is actively shipping material off site.  

EPA’s ERRS is repackaging material in Building #2 to make it DOT shippable and reacting material from Building #2 and Building #9.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF Logistics who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF shipped 1 truckload of Intermet material.  The load consisted of 4 pallets @ 4 drums/pallet and 52 drums in polyurethane over-packs with a weight of 34,620 pounds.  The load was consigned to Speed Global Logistics, Buffalo,NY and was transported by Hazmat Trucking, Buffalo, NY.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities. ERRS repackaged -70 magnesium drums into new DOT shippable drums there were 29 drums repackaged for the day.  ERRS also worked on condensing the waste piles and will begin bulk shipments on 5/30/08.

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF did housekeeping of the areas in which they worked.  MHF gathered pallets in a central location inside gate#1 and dumped old over-packs in roll-off as well as swept areas of debris.

USEPA Senior Site Administrative Officer of The Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site for administrative oversight.  Rich Messimer demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities. ERRS shipped off site 23 bulk loads of the waste piles.  The estimated weight of each truckload was 22 tons for a total of 506 tons (1,012,000 pounds).  The loads were consigned to BFI-Carbon Limestone Landfill, Lowellville, OH and transported by John Brown Trucking, Portersville, PA.

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.        



Next Steps
SPX Contech plans to ship the remainder of its material the week of 6/2/08.

Intermet has plans to continue to ship material off site until they have completed shipping all their material.


EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
