Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has been on site and identified the remainder of its material and is preparing drums to be shipped off site.

EPA’s ERRS is repackaging material in Building #9 to make it DOT shippable and reacting material from Building #2 and Building #9.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF received a load of polyurethane over-packs for the SPX Contech material.  MHF used pH test paper to check water in the drums and did a visual inspection for oil.  Once it was determined that the pH was not to high or low but within acceptable parameters and no oil was visible the water was drained out of the drums to make them lighter for shipping.  MHF drained and over-packed 37 drums for the day.  MHF also did housekeeping before they left for the day.

USEPA OSC Jack Downie mobilized to site for oversight of activities.

USEPA Senior Site Administrative Officer of The Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site for administrative oversight.  Rich Messimer demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities. ERRS shipped off site 22 bulk loads of the waste piles.  The estimated weight of each truckload was 22 tons for a total of 484 tons (968,000 pounds).  The loads were consigned to BFI-Carbon Limestone Landfill, Lowellville, OH and transported by John Brown Trucking, Portersville, PA.  ERRS continued to repackage material from Building #9 where the material will be staged after repackaging.

START mobilized to site and assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.
