Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has shipped its last load off site.    

EPA’s ERRS is shipping the non hazardous bulk material off site. PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF shipped 1 truckload of material belonging to SPX Contech the load consisted of 6 pallets @ 8 drums/pallet and 30 polyurethane over-packs with a total weight of 21,620 pounds.  The load was consigned to Speed Global logistics, Buffalo, NY and was transported by Hazmat Environmental Group Inc, Buffalo, NY.

USEPA OSC Jack Downie was on site for oversight of activities.

USEPA Senior Site Administrative Officer of The Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site for administrative oversight.  Rich Messimer demobilized.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman mobilized to site to assist the EPA with oversight of activities.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities. ERRS shipped off site 23 truckloads of non hazardous bulk material (Ash, Soil & Debris).  Each truckload had an estimated weight of 22 tons for a total of 506 tons (1,012,000 pounds).  The loads were consigned to BFI-Carbon Limestone Landfill, Lowellville, OH and were transported by John Brown Trucking, New Castle, PA.  ERRS also continued repackaging material found in various buildings on site to make the material DOT shippable.  While repackaging material a drum containing Lanthanum Nickel caught fire the drum was moved to the middle of the scale pad and was allowed to burn isolated from other material.

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

START attended the morning safety meeting held by MHF who is contracting for Intermet, SPX Contech, and Product Technology.  MHF shipped the last load of SPX Contech material which consisted of 51 polyurethane over-pack drums the weight of the load was 18,980 pounds.  The load was consigned to Speed Global logistics, Buffalo, NY and was transported by Hazmat Environmental Group Inc, Buffalo, NY.  MHF also shipped off site all their old pallets as well as cleaned areas in which they worked.

ERRS shipped off site 18 bulk loads of the waste piles.  The estimated weight of each truckload was 22 tons for a total of 396 tons (792,000 pounds).  The loads were consigned to BFI-Carbon Limestone Landfill, Lowellville, OH and transported by John Brown Trucking, Portersville, PA.  ERRS continued to repackage material from Building #9 where the material will be staged after repackaging.

START mobilized to site and assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.        


Next Steps
MHF plans to be on site 6/9/08 to complete the cleaning of their work areas..

EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
