Site Description
EPA is continuing emergency removal actions at this site during the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials.  Magnesium generators, who previously supplied Remacor with recyclable magnesium and magnesium alloys, are removing their materials from the site.  SPX Contech has shipped its last load off site.  No new PRP activity is scheduled at this time.    

EPA’s ERRS is shipping the non hazardous bulk material off site.  PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site.  EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

USEPA OSC Jack Downie mobilized to site for a meeting with PADEP personnel and for oversight of activities.  OSC Downie demobilized.

PADEP Eric Gustafson (Regional Manager Environmental Cleanup Program), Gary Mechtly (Environmental Group Manager Environmental Cleanup Program), and Mariruth Hoffman (Environmental Chemist I Environmental Cleanup Program) mobilized to site to meet with OSC Jack Downie.  PADEP Gustafson, Mechtly, and Hoffman demobilized.

A meeting occurred between OSC Downie and PADEP Gustafson, Mechtly, and Hoffman with START in attendance.  The main topic of the meeting was the length of time that may be needed to get the site to a point of partial transitioning as a viable commercial site.  Topics discussed to meet these goals were; Site assessment data and assessment needed, restrictions if any that may need to be imposed, change of course to facilitate the transition, what if any are the main problem areas, and at what point will the EPA consider the site work completed.  A site tour was given with special interest given to areas and task that have been completed and areas of concern.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities. ERRS shipped 14 truckloads of bulk non hazardous material off site.  The loads were estimated to weigh 44,000 pounds (22 tons) each for a total of 616,000 pounds (308 tons).  The loads were consigned to BFI-Carbon Limestone Landfill, Lowellville, OH and were transported by John Brown Trucking, New Castle, PA.  

START assisted as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.  START demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities.  ERRS received 1 truckload of 55-gallon drums to continue to repackage material.  ERRS shipped the remainder of the bulk non hazardous material off site, 20 truckloads.  The loads were estimated to weigh 44,000 pounds (22 tons) each for a total of 880,000 pounds (440 tons).  The loads were consigned to BFI-Carbon Limestone Landfill, Lowellville, OH and were transported by John Brown Trucking, New Castle, PA.  The total of all non hazardous bulk material shipped off site was 125 truckloads with an estimated weight of 44,000 pounds (22 tons) a piece, 5,500,000 pounds (2,750 tons).  ERRS continued to repackage material from Building #9 68 drums were repackaged for the day.  

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

USEPA Senior Site Administrative Officer of the Removal Program Rich Messimer mobilized to site for administrative oversight.  USEPA Messimer demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities.  ERRS repackaged 50 drums for the day and did maintenance on their equipment for the long weekend.  ERRS will demobilize on 6/13/08 and mobilize on 6/16/08.  

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.  START will demobilize on 6/13/08.        


Next Steps
EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
