EPA’s ERRS is mixing and repackaging RAD material. PADEP is providing technical and oversight support at the site. EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA.  EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site in addition to coordinating the activities of the various generators.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman mobilized to site to assist the EPA in oversight of operations.  PADEP Hoffman demobilized.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities.  ERRS began repackaging low level RAD drums to meet DOT and disposal requirements. ERRS dressed in level C throughout the operation. START monitored the drums using a Ludlum Model 19 Micro R Meter.  While mixing old low level rad drum contents from Building #9 a fire occurred in the pit and several drums that had been repackaged were noticed to be bulging.  ERRS moved the drums to a safe location and punched holes in the lids to relieve the pressure. The material was then placed in the reaction pit and mixed with water where it will be left until reaction of the material is complete.

START assisted the EPA as needed and conducted written/photographic documentation.

Next Steps
EPA will continue to coordinate with magnesium waste generators for the safe and appropriate removal of the material from the site.  EPA will continue to coordinate with all local, state, and federal agencies.
