Site Description
EPA continues its emergency removal action at this site which currently involves the repackaging, transportation, and removal of flammable magnesium materials. EPA continues to repackage the magnesium waste to increase the material's stability. Staging of the repackaged drums continues in an organized fashion to maximize accessibility for retrieval by generators or disposal contractors. PADEP is overseeing site activities for the state and providing support. EPA START contractor TechLaw is providing technical and administrative support to the EPA. EPA and PADEP officials continue to control access to the site as well as coordinate activities with the various generators.

EPA Rich Messimer was on site to perform cost tracking for the site. No removal activities took place.
09/03/08
USEPA OSC Jack Downie mobilized to site for oversight of removal activities.
PADEP Gary Wozniak visited the site for a meeting with OSC Downie.
START mobilized to site, assisted the EPA as needed, monitored containerized waste for stability using thermal imagery, and conducted written/photographic documentation.
Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities. ERRS continued repackaging drums. ERRS repackaged 30 drums during the day. ERRS also provided routine maintenance of equipment and facility grounds.

USEPA OSC Jack Downie was on site for oversight of activities.

PADEP Mariruth Hoffman visited the site and assisted the EPA with oversight.

Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractor Guardian Environmental, Inc held its morning safety meeting and discussed the days planned activities.  ERRS repackaged 57 drums of magnesium during the day. ERRS also continued routine equipment maintenance and grounds-keeping.

A total of 3,262 drums of magnesium waste are now stored in building 2. ERRS also continued routine equipment maintenance and grounds-keeping.

Next Steps
ERRS will continue repackaging magnesium waste from corroded drums into new DOT approved vented drums. ERRS will also arrange for off-site treatment and disposal of hazardous waste materials in building 9. ERRS is planning procedures to empty material from the silos on site.
