Current Activities
On May 07, 2008 excavation of contaminated soil began at the Site.  Soil is stockpiled, screened to remove larger rocks and then staged for disposal. Excavation on the Barrel SIte has been completed

EPA has been conducting additional sampling to further characterize the extent of contamination including]vapor intrusion into the indoor air of abutting residential properties.  EPA’s Northeast Regional Laboratory (NERL) personnel have collected 24 hour indoor air samples in abutting residential properties.  Analytical results are not yet available.

EPA’s START contractor is in the process of sampling surface soils to determine the extent of contamination to abutting residential properties.  As elevated levels of contaminants were found in surrounding residential areas, an action memorandum addendum for a change in scope was  developed. It is not anticipated that the Site will require more funding than originally budgeted.

An Action Memo Addendum was signed on June 04, 2008 to expand the scope of work to include abutting properties.  As the investigation proceeds,  additional private properties may be included in the cleanup.  RIDEM supports these decisions.

AS of July 10, 2008, the excavation at the 18-20 Esmond Street Property has been completed.  Soil is saged and awaiting transportatiaon and disposal.

Planned Removal Actions
1. A Public Availability Session is scheduled for July 14, 2008 at the East Smithfield Public Library.

2.Transportation and disposal of staged soil will begin the week of July 14, 2008.

3. Excavation will begin on abutting properties by July 21, 2008.

Next Steps
1. Continue investigation of adjacent residential properties and assess impact.

2. Initiate transportation and disposal of excavated contaminated soils.

3 Coordinate excavation on private property with proprerty owners.

Key Issues
Coordinate with RIDEM regarding  excavation of contamination on residential properties.
