On March 5, 2022, U.S. EPA
was notified that 80,000 gallons of diesel oil was released into Dutch Creek in
Wilmington, Ohio from a 1-million-gallon storage tank owned by R+L
Carriers. U.S. EPA now estimates the spill was 22,628 gallons, not 80,000
gallons initially reported. The new number reflects how much oil remains in the
tank.
U.S. EPA, OEPA, Clinton County EMA, and Port William-Liberty
Township Fire Department are assisting with oversight of the cleanup. The
responsible party, R+L Carriers, is conducting the cleanup. They have
eight oil containment points on Dutch Creek between the spill location on their
property and 4 miles downstream. About 17,333 gallons of diesel oil have been
collected from and around the storage tank and Dutch Creek. U.S. EPA issued POLREP 6 (final) on April 7, 2022. Ohio EPA DERR is the lead agency for the remediation phase.
