Background
On March 16, 2022, a Walmart Distribution Center in Plainfield, Indiana, was involved in a large fire. Black smoke was generated and fire ash and debris were carried offsite. The Plainfield Fire Department and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) requested assistance from EPA for monitoring air quality. EPA mobilized staff and support contractors to collect measurements for air pollutants. Air measurements were collected in the field and air samples were collected and submitted for lab analysis. Lab results will be posted to this website following data review.

EPA is coordinating with other organizations, including: Plainfield Fire Department, Town of Plainfield, Hendricks County Health Department, Marion County Public Health Department, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Walmart corporation.
