Background

At 9 a.m. on January 11, 2023, an explosion occurred at the Carus, LLC chemical plant in La Salle, Illinois. The plant manufactures water treatment and pollution control chemicals. The plant was evacuated, and the local police department issued a shelter-in-place order surrounding the plant affecting about 1,000 residents. La Salle County Emergency Management Agency and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency requested U.S. EPA’s assistance with air monitoring.
