On January 26, 2012 OSC Tricia Edwards responded to a transformer oil spill in Scio Township, Michigan near Ann Arbor. Scio Township Hazmat requested EPA assistance. Approximately 150 gallons of transformer oil spilled onto a roadway, a driveway, and into a wetlands area. The oil tested negative for PCBs but additional analysis will be conducted. The responsible party, Stadium/Budget Towing, has hired a cleanup contractor. The contractor vacuumed oil from the ditch, road and driveway surfaces. Sorbent pads and boom have been strategically placed in the ditch to contain oil and sheen. The contractor is excavating contaminated soil and placing it in a roll-off box. Soiled boom will be replaced as needed.
