Release of elemental mercury into three private residences.

The Site consists of three residential properties in a suburban neighborhood.

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

Elemental mercury released into residential properties exposing family members to mercury vapors.

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results

Initial air monitoring revealed levels of mercury in the air at levels above health limits for exposure.

2.1.1 Narrative

On Wednesday 4/6 EPA was informed that a release of elemental mercury had occurred inside a private residence, and that mercury had been inadvertently tracked into two additional houses.  On Friday 4/8 the NYSDEC verbally requested EPA assistance at the Site.  On Saturday 4/9 an OSC was deployed to the scene to commence air monitoring.  There were some initial access problems which were resolved.  The NYSDEC is the lead agency for this response and EPA is acting in a supporting role.

2.1.2 Response Actions to Date

EPA responded to the Site with Lumex instrumentation to support emergency response staff from the NYSDEC. 

2.1.3 Enforcement Activities, Identity of Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs)

One family member has been identified as the individual who accidently spilled the mercury, and the two other families who were subsequently affected by the spill via tracking into their houses.
