On April 3, 2023 a custom woodwork cabinet company contacted EPA requesting assistance with safe management and disposal of a jar of picric acid. The jar was found when cleaning out decades-old containers where chemicals were stored at their facility.

Picric acid has explosive properties and dried picric acid, such as the residues around the jar closure, can be shock-sensitive.  After discovering the jar (a 1-Liter container), the company secured the jar in a bucket of water outdoors.  EPA deployed OSC, Joni Sandoval, and the ERRS contractor on April 3, 2023, to stabilize the container and provide for proper disposal.  State officials were notified.

EPA and ERRS packaged the waste for transport and proper disposal. EPA demobilized from the Site on April 3, 2023.
