Beginning June 26, 2007 and continuing, strong storms across south central and southeast Kansas have produced torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding/flash flooding. Up to 21 inches of rain has been reported near Fredonia (Wilson County), Kansas. More torrential rain and flooding are forecasted through Monday, July 2, 2007.

A crude oil spill has occured at the Coffeyville Resources facility in Coffeyville, KS near the Northeast Oklahoma border. EPA Region 7 is responding to the source and is on scene with the facility to coordinate spill activities. Flooding in the area has caused the oil spill to impact the Verdegris River which flows downstream into Oklahoma in Nowata County. The oil spill in the Verdegris River may impact downstream water users.

R6 has mobilized an OSC to the area and is coordinating with R7 and Oklahoma. Aerial assets are being deployed to assess the extent of flooding and areas in Oklahoma potentially affected by oil released from the Coffeyville Resources refinery.
